I’ve clung to the field
the same way I’ve
clung to the failing

of the field
& since nothing
grows out of mud

like Emily & I
grow out of mud,
we chased each other

& since the field
will never be whole
again, that became

our lives & since we were
never recognizable
again, we never

needed to become
whole, either.
When I go to town,

I drag bits & streaks
of our paradise
through every store.

They take my money.
They know my name.
They want more

than anything to ask me
questions about Emily
& about the crop

of mine that they can
never see
from the highway.
