I will look down on you from all the corners of the earth.
~ Frida Kahlo
We keep you close in
silver, jade, and coral –
around wrists, the base
of throats, where pulses
rush under your brazen gaze.
You hang from our lobes –
whispering reminders to speak with
truth’s switchblade tongue, a mouth-
ful of blood better than self-betrayal.
We slide your courage onto
fingers so when we stroke new lovers
the body’s yearning outshines
white corsets and braced bones.
We cannot forget your stranded
days in the bed of the Blue House,
your black hair wreathed with flowers,
swept high into braids wild as vines.
Even in the slipping
away, you painted
VIVA LA VIDA
in red oil across
the sweet flesh
riddled with seeds.
